Tea Tree Oil

Australian Tea Tree Oil is a volatile essential oil obtained by steam distillation of the freshly harvested foliage of an Australian Tea Tree (Melaleuca alternifolia). This small tree indigenous to the North Coast of New South Wales has been adapted to plantation production where it’s spectacular regenerative ability enables it to be harvested regularly.

The oil, a complex of over 100 naturally occurring compounds, is a clear & colourless to pale yellow liquid with a characteristic odour. Oil from Coldstream Plantation is of the highest quality Pharmaceutical Grade, having a low concentration of 1,8-cineole and a high concentration of terpinen-4-ol. The oil also conforms to both the Australian Standard AS 2782-1997 and the International Standard ISO 4730 for Tea Tree Oil (Oil of Melaleuca - terpinen-4-ol type).

The advantages

  • Natural and environmentally sound
  • Produced from naturally regenerating source
  • Broad spectrum antimicrobial activity

  • Does not destroy healthy tissue

A Safe Product

Australian Tea Tree oil has been used as a natural antiseptic for over 70 years in Australia and is currently in use world-wide. The oil exhibits a wide range of activity against fungi, gram negative and gram positive bacteria.

A broad range of cosmetic and therapeutic products include Australian Tea Tree Oil for its healing powers, with clinical trials proving the oil’s effectiveness against acne, tinea, vaginal infection and as a useful treatment for burns. Current in-vitro results suggest Australian Tea Tree Oil may be useful in the treatment of methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) carriage within hospitals. The following extracts from clinical trial reports highlight the potential of Australian Tea Tree Oil.

Research data indicates that Tea Tree Oil does not cause toxicity due to dermal adsorption and that formulations of less than 10% w/w pose little risk of skin irritation. As with other commonly used essential oils, 100% Tea Tree Oil appears to be toxic when administered orally and hence the ingestion of pure Tea Tree Oil is not recommended.

Whilst Australian Tea Tree Oil is suitable for dermal application in most cases, those with tender skins and/or a tendency toward dermatological irritation should use product formulations containing less than 10% Australian Tea Tree Oil.

Extracts

"The results of this study show that 5% Tea Tree Oil in a water based gel is an effective topical treatment for acne, although less effective because of its slower onset of action than 5% benzoyl peroxide…. lack of obvious adverse effects may alone make it a feasible alternative."
Bassett et al, Med. J. Aust 1990; 153: 455-458

"Thus Tea Tree Oil Cream (10% w/w) appears to reduce the symptomatology of tinea pedis as effectively as tolnaftate 1%."
Tong et al, Australas J. Dermatol. 1992; 33: 145-149
